SMP was established in 1991 in the heartland of American surf and skate - Orange County California. The brand began as some good ideas between friends flowed and made their way on to t-shirts.
Sold through surf and skate stores the brand made its way to the international scene, licensing operations throughout the world. Ride snowboards acquired the operations, before they were bought out by K2.
SMP was then bought by the Australian licensee. After some time growing and developing the brand SMP International was formed and new ownership took over - ready to push SMP to the next level.
Girls wear was launched under the Shy name, and since it's inception in 2003 has been hugely successful.
On 6 October 2005, SMP launched its 12 000 sq m / 138 000 sq ft SMP Skatepark, making it the biggest skatepark in the world by almost double. Located in Shanghai China, the park boasts the biggest vert ramp in the world, the biggest concrete bowl in the world, a 5000 - 7000 seat arena, plaza and beginners areas.
SMP also held the inaugural "SMP Shanghai Showdown Gravity Games" as part of the grand opening of the park. The top skateboard, BMX, inline skate and FMX athletes attended including: Sandro Dias, Neal Hendrix, Lincoln Ueda, Pierre Luc Gagnon, Willy Santos, Dayne Brummet, Josh Evin, Greg Lutzka, Dennis McCoy, Tom Stober, Tom Haugen, Koji Kraft, Luke Cole, Matt Cole, Noel Cotter, Fabiola da Silva, Shane Yost, Eito and Takeshi Yasutoko.
The "Showdown" is in invitation only format where the best of the best compete head to head. No heats, no rounds - make or break.
The question we get asked the most, the thing that many people want to know, what does S-M-P stand for? At different times SMP has used: "skate more parks", "surf more pipes", "snowboard more peaks", "sex money power", "sonic misfit punk" and many more in it's marketing campaigns.
From an official standpoint the brand is registered as "SMP" so strictly speaking, SMP doesn't stand for anything, but depending on what era you grew up in SMP will have used a different slogan in its marketing at the time.
SMP...Some More Possibilities...Seriously Massive Park...Solve My Problem...Shoot My Photo...Simple Minded People...Seriously Moronic Plan...So Much Plastic...?
